Tips on buying stone! Can you really distinguish between granite and marble?

Marble and granite are becoming more and more popular in home furnishings because of their beauty and durability. Here is how to distinguish between granite and marble.

Stone is mainly divided into two categories: man-made and natural. Here we mainly introduce natural marble and natural granite.

Natural marble is a metamorphic rock formed by the original rock in the earth's crust through high temperature and high pressure in the crust. It is a medium-hard stone, mainly composed of calcite, limestone, serpentine and dolomite. The main ingredient is calcium carbonate, which accounts for more than 50%. Others include magnesium carbonate, calcium oxide, manganese oxide and silicon dioxide. Because marble generally contains impurities, and calcium carbonate in the atmosphere is affected by carbon dioxide, carbides, and water vapor, it is also easy to weather and dissolve, and the surface quickly loses its luster. Therefore, a few varieties, such as white marble and Ai Yeqing, which are pure and relatively stable and durable, can be used outdoors. Other varieties are not suitable for outdoor use, and are generally only used for indoor decorative surfaces.

Natural marble can be made into decorative panels for advanced decoration projects, used for indoor walls, facing surfaces, railings, floors, windowsills, services in hotels, exhibition halls, theaters, shopping malls, libraries, airports, stations and other public construction projects It is the ideal high-grade interior decoration material for the finishes of the door faces of platforms and elevators. In addition, it can also be used to make marble murals, handicrafts, daily necessities, etc.

Natural granite is igneous rock, also called acid crystalline plutonic rock. It is the most widely distributed rock in igneous rock. It is a hard stone, composed of feldspar, quartz and mica. Its composition is mainly silica, accounting for about 65%. ~75%. The rock is hard and compact, and can be divided into three types: "pegmatite", "coarse crystal" and "fine crystal" according to the size of its crystal grains.

The quality of granite is determined by the mineral composition and structure. High-quality granite has fine and uniform crystal particles, less mica content and more quartz, and does not contain pyrite. Granite is not easy to be weathered and deteriorated, and its appearance and color can be maintained for more than a hundred years, so it is mostly used for wall foundations and exterior wall finishes. Because of its high hardness and wear resistance, granite is also often used in high-level building decoration projects, such as the floor of the lobby.

Because granite is harder and more acid resistant than marble, it is more suitable for outdoor balconies, courtyards, floors and windowsills of guest restaurants in home decoration. The marble can be used for the countertops of bar counters, cooking counters and dining cabinets.

1. Granite: Granite stone has no colored stripes, most of which have colored spots, and some are pure colors. The finer the mineral particles, the better, indicating that the structure is tight and strong.

2. Marble plate: Marble material has simple mineral composition, easy to process, most of it has fine texture and good mirror effect. The disadvantage is that the texture is softer than granite, it is easily damaged when hit by hard and heavy objects, and light-colored stones are easily contaminated. Try to choose a single color for floor marble, and striped decorative cloth is better when choosing a countertop. Other selection methods can refer to the selection method of granite.
